Why Would Twitter X Users Hide Their Blue Checkmarks?
Twitter X is now allowing users to hide their Blue Verification Checkmarks (that they pay for.)
It may seem strange, but there are quite a few reasons for this interesting choice.
Sometimes, it’s about the desire for privacy, while at other times, it’s about wanting to be seen as a regular user and not a high-profile Twitter X account.
Let’s dive into this social media mystery to uncover the truth.
What Are The Blue Checkmarks?
The blue checkmarks were a symbol of authenticity that Twitter used to give out to celebrities, journalists, politicians, etc.
Today, however, that has all changed under Elon Musk. Now, anyone that wants to be verified and pays $8/per month in the United States can have a blue checkmark near their name. It’s a monthly subscription base plan.
However, it’s a little different though under Elon as it comes with perks for the users.
The Blue Checkmark Perks
- You can edit your tweets
- Highlight certain tweets near your profile for others to see
- Reduction in seeing ads
- Prioritize getting your tweets out
- Upload videos up to 3 hours
- Tweet up to 25,000 characters vs. 280-character tweets or (posts as they now call them.
- Read more posts on the Twitter X network. (Temporary rate limits.)
- Future share in advertising revenues.
So Why Hide The Checkmarks?
Some may want not others to know that they like Twitter X since Elon took over. Others are remaining loyal no matter who owns the social network.
It’s the Elon Musk/Twitter X haters that have some of those with the blue checkmarks in fear. They fear being called out as loyal to this network.
However, that fear doesn’t seem to reach those with a Meta/Facebook badge that is also a subscription base under Mark Zuckerberg.
(Reminder, If you haven’t filed your claim on the Facebook settlement, the time is ticking. The deadline is this month on the 25th of August)
Reducing Pressure and Expectations
Maybe hiding the blue checkmark allows users to create and share content without the added pressure of meeting the expectations associated with the verified status.
Or they feel they would not be in a fishbowl.
Remaining Anonymous on Twitter X
In some cases, individuals may prefer to keep their online presence completely anonymous. Whether they are protecting their personal lives, expressing controversial opinions, or simply enjoying the freedom of being an unidentified user, hiding the blue checkmark helps maintain their desired level of anonymity.
By removing this verification symbol, users can navigate Twitter without revealing their true identities, allowing them to express themselves more freely and without fear of potential consequences.
Your Turn
Will you be hiding your blue checkmark if you have one? I’ve experimented with the subscription service and am not sure if I will continue with it or not.
At first, I thought, no way I won’t hide but then it may increase my followers if I did hide it.
It could be another experiment for me to test out and if you know me, I love to test that type of thing out to share with my audience.
